As part of its Training, Standardization and Accreditation Programme, the ICCP undertakes a periodic
accreditation programme through which individual petrographers can be granted ICCP Accreditation in the
techniques of petrographic analysis. Accreditation is granted only to laboratories that participate
in and pass one of the periodic exercises, and applies only to work undertaken by the named analyst.
In the event that the named analyst should leave the accredited laboratory, the accreditation would
no longer apply. Laboratories where several analysts engage in petrographic analysis are encouraged
to seek accreditation for all their analysts. At this time, ICCP Accreditation requires successful
performance in maceral group analysis and/or random reflectance; at some time in the future, the ICCP
may offer accreditation in maximum vitrinite reflectance analysis

The ICCP has organised two Accreditation Exercises and these resulted in Provisional Accreditation
Certificates being awarded to successful analysts in August, 1995. These expired on 31st. December,
1996. The 1996 Accreditation Exercise extends this programme further. Accreditation Certificates
issued for the 1996 Exercise will expire on 31st. December, 2000. The intent is that, eventually,
re-Accreditation in the ICCP Accreditation Programme will be an annual process.
