For over twenty years, Pearson and Associates has maintained a strong research interest, with special emphasis on petrographic prediction of coke quality (1, 2, 3, 4, 9); automated microscopy (5, 6, 7, 8, 9); development of new methods of data interpretation (5); and reactivity of inertinites in western Canadian coal (3, 9).

Dr. Pearson has attended and delivered papers at Iron & Steel Society annual conferences in Washington (1990), Toronto (1992 & 1998), & Chicago (1994). As strongly committed supporters of the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology ICCP, Dave & Jen Pearson have attended many annual meetings as full Voting Members in Urbana (1979), Doncaster (1986), Calgary (1984), Wollongong (1990), Porto Alegre (1991), Chania (1993), Oviedo (1994), Heerlen (1996), Porto (1998), Rio de Janeiro (2000), Copenhagen (2001) & Utrecht (2003). Between 1990 and 1994, and from 2001, Dave Pearson has been the convenor of the ICCP's Working Group on Automation, and was co-convenor for the Working Group on Standardization from 1996 to 2000.

Dr. Pearson is Canada's representative to the International Standards Organization (ISO) Working Group 17 (Coal Petrography), responsible for the revision of ISO7404 "Methods for the petrographic analysis of bituminous coal and anthracite"
